Bamberg

Collage produced by Christian Matyas during the Tripod Project

Bamberg is a town of 70,000 inhabitants in northern Bavaria. With a proven place tradition reaching back to the 8th century, the today's appearance of the Old Town of Bamberg was shaped mostly by the prince-bishops of Würzburg-Bamberg, who turned Bamberg into a representative baroque town. Due to rare and only occasional losses of basic fabric, the Old Town of Bamberg presents itself as a still authentic medieval ensemble. Lying on several prongs of surrounding hills and between two creeks of river Regnitz, it is called "the Franconian Rome".

In 1993 Bamberg was inscribed on the Unesco World Heritage List reflecting its supra-regional role model function for other Central European towns. As a result, in travel guides (Lonely Planet) Bamberg is often promoted as "a perfect small town". Whereas its inhabitants appreciate its manageable size and nonetheless urban feeling, beside its build heritage visitors like its richness of vantage points and its high density of breweries as well. Recent research at the department Computing in the Cultural Sciences of the University of Bamberg reveals the Old Townhall, the Cathedral and Little Venice as the three "must have seens" for a quick touristic view (Schlieder & Matyas, 2009).
